Kapok Silk cotton (Ilavam Panju)is a fiber taken from the seed- pod of the tropical kapok tree, also called the silk-cotton tree. Kapok tree blooms uncommonly, typically every 5-10 years. It is productive tree, normally with 4000 fruits growing at any one-time when it does blooms. Harvesting kapok is labor concentrated. Usually, people knock the ripe unopened pods off the tree. However, they can also cut the pods from the tree or harvest it when it falls to the ground. Soon after harvest the fruits are hulled and seed and fiber are removed from the pods by hand, then they are stirred in a basket till the seeds fall and the fiber rises. When the pods reaches maturity and is not harvested, it will break and expose the cotton-like fibers and seed to the wind. The word kapok means both to the tree and to the fiber it produces. It is also known as silk cotton or Java cotton.

Kapok fiber’s characteristics:
- Bounciness: kapok resists clumping (i.e. it does not become lumpy) it also bounces back to the original shape after washing
- Environmental friendly: kapok is a natural biodegradable
- Yellowish brown, shinning. Each fiber is about 2.5 cm long, has a wide lumen (central cavity) and thin walls covered with waterproof wax.
- Light weight: 8 times lighter than cotton by volume.
- Buoyant: the waxy coating helps reject water, and air bubbles are usually trapped in lumen, making kapok 5 times more buoyant than cork.
- Hypoallergenic
- Packs down firmly: easy to press kapok fiber in a container down.
- Slippery: the waxy coating makes kapok becomes slippery, so easily adjusts to shape, for example of the head on a pillow.
